On November 11, 2019, the signing ceremony of the first water supply PPP project in Bangladesh — the development of water supply and distribution facilities in Purbachal New Town of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, was held in Dhaka. The project is jointly invested and operated by United Water Group and Delcot Group Bangladesh, has a designed water supply capacity of 340,000 tons/day and will provide qualified water service to 1.6 million residents within 24 sq km of Purbachal New Town with a concession period of 15 years
Mr. Rezaul Karim, Minister of Housing and Public Works, Mr. Golam Gazi, Minister of Textiles, Mr. Abul Azad, Chief Coordinating Officer, Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Muhammad Siddique, Director, PPP Bureau, Prime Minister’s Office, and Dr. Sultan Ahmed, Director, RAJUK, Mr. Phillip Weijing Yu, Chairman of United Water Group, Mr. Dayem Khandker, Executive Director of Delcot Group and more than 160 distinguished guests attended the signing ceremony. Dr. Sultan Ahmed and Chairman Yu Weijing signed the PPP contract on behalf of RAJUK and United Delcot Water LTD. ,the joint venture company of the PPP project.
Minister Rezaul Karim delivered a warm speech on behalf of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works of Bangladesh. He conveyed the congratulations of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the signing ceremony and expressed the high expectation that with the strong support of United Water Group, the PPP joint venture Company could accelerate the construction progress of the project and realize the water supply at an early date, and also make an outstanding contribution to the development of Purbachal New Town!
The water supply PPP project of Purbachal New Town in Dhaka took nearly 4 years from conceptual design, project approval to scheme selection. The World Bank and IFC provided professional consultation for the Bangladeshi government throughout the process. United Water won the bid with its outstanding performance in water supply projects, outstanding construction and operation plans, and competitive prices against many international and domestic competitors. As the first water PPP project in Bangladesh, the Purbachal New Town Water Supply Project is of great significance as a model for the development of the country’s water industry. The success of the project is also an important milestone in United Water’s international ambitions!
